Hulu’s Love, Victor Does 2018’s Love, Simon JUSTICE!

The spin-off we didn’t know we needed.

Let’s get one thing straight: Love, Victor is not!

We celebrate pride all day and everyday but June is specifically known as pride month. During this month, streaming services spotlight LGBTQ+ films and TV shows and if you are looking for a suggestion, Hulu has one for you. Get ready to finish Love, Victor in one day or less.

Back in 2018, the film Love, Simon hit theaters and was hit with love and praise from both the critics and audiences. Based on the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, it follows high school teen Simon Spier’s coming out journey.

Now two years later, we are gifted with the long-awaited spinoff called Love, Victor that came out a week ago on Hulu. Fans in love and people familiar with Love, Simon immediately binged-watched the series but if you need persuasion, grab some popcorn and enjoy the non-spoiler review.

Love, Victor follows Victor Salazar (played by Michael Camino), a Latino teen who moves from Texas to Atlanta. Starting a new school, we go with him on his journey to self-discovery of his sexual identity with his friends, family, and huge crush on the barista at his job.

Just like adapted screenplays, the key to rightfully executing a spinoff is using the given source material while adding your own spice. Even though it follows the basis of Love, Simon’s plot, its uniqueness shines bright. To begin with, Love, Victor touches on many different elements, a big one being cultural representation. It is centered around a Latino household, its customs, and its beliefs. Not only a Latino family but a Latino conservative family. Along with this, the show touches and really highlights on topics such as the power of friendship, financial issues, family issues, bullying, acceptance, homophobia, and more.

The problem with teen comedies and dramas nowadays is they tend to be described with one word: cringe. This is not the case for Love, Victor. While at times it leans toward the cliche, it still offers so much heart, feel-good moments, and genuine laughs. All this is hats off to the well-casted characters and their chemistry.

Where to start? Michael Camino is Victor Salazar. He does a fantastic job at portraying the life of a high school teen making his way through all his hardships.

Mia Brooks, played by Rachel Hilson, is the definition of a loving and caring friend who is always there for others.

Felix Westen, played by Anthony Turpel, is the MVP character of the show, just saying.

Lake Meriwether, played by Bebe Wood, is the confident and sassy partner in crime of Mia.

Benji Campbell, played by George Sear, is the character we immediately fall in love with and root for.

Andrew, played by Mason Gooding, is the definition of character development.

Pilar Salazar, played by Isabella Ferreira, is the badass sister and queen of the Salazar family.

This show is filled with even more talent and characters from main to supporting that we instantly love or eventually grow on us. No character is perfect but we see their character development throughout the first season and each have something to offer to the audience watching.

If this wasn’t enough convincing, then I will leave you with a short teaser and the trailer which should do the trick. All 8 episodes of Love, Victor are streaming now on Hulu.
