Emergency hearing called for sudden changes made to USPS

The USPS Postmaster General is one title of government you may have never heard of until now. Louis DeJoy of North Carolina holds that title and is under fire for the changes he has made to the USPS just days before the election.

Under the new changes announced last week that has officials concerned is the fact that the USPS won’t classify ballots as first class mail and that if states want them to be sent as first class mail they will have to pay more as well as the slowing of mail service. 46 states received a letter from the general council for the postal service as first reported Friday by The Washington Post.

In order for votes to count on Election Day, voters should have their ballots mailed in by October 27th which is an entire week before Election Day.

DeJoy was a big donor for President Trump’s 2016 campaign. The NY Times reported he gave $1.2m to his campaign and then an additional $1.3m to the Republican Party that same year.

An emergency hearing has been called by the House for next Monday, August 24th.

In the meantime, the Inspector General has said he is investigating the changes announced by DeJoy for possible federal ethics violations. More details to come.
